Zhang XinYi Selina
(b. 1996) is an interdisciplinary artist and architectural designer working between London, Hong Kong, and China. Her practice spans drawing, painting, writing, ceramics, sculpture, video, sound, and spatial installation. Rooted in personal narrative, her work explores memory, trauma, healing, emotional vulnerability, and diasporic experience, drawing inspiration from self-psychoanalysis and the theories of Carl Jung and Daoism.

Born in Shenzhen and raised in Hong Kong, Selina graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in 2023, receiving both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture. Her architectural background informs her sensitivity to space, atmosphere, materiality, society, social responsibility, and the relationship between body and environment.

In 2019, Selina experienced a period of severe depression and suicidal ideation, leading her to pause her education and travel to Koh Phangan, Thailand. Where she immersed herself in yoga, meditation, and spiritual practice, later becoming a teacher herself. This period profoundly transformed her understanding of the body, consciousness, and spirituality, laying the foundations for her artistic practice.

In 2020, during an artist residency in Dali, China, Selina began a daily drawing practice as a way of navigating healing and self-discovery. What began as a documentation of everyday life gradually evolved into an intimate dialogue with herself.

Much like psychoanalytic therapy, working intuitively and guided by process rather than predetermined outcomes, her sustained practice allows recurring themes and emotional patterns to emerge, revealing unconscious beliefs, inner conflicts, and protective mechanisms. Through this ongoing dialogue between intuition, material, and the unconscious, making becomes both a means of inquiry and a form of healing, allowing her to reconnect with her inner child and better understand herself.

Her work reflects an ongoing attempt to make sense of the human experience, exploring loneliness, tenderness, identity, belonging, desire, and emotional transformation. Through intimate and often playful forms, she seeks to create spaces where vulnerability can exist openly, and where people may feel seen, heard, and understood. She believes every individual carries a story worth listening to, and that art can become a bridge between inner worlds.

Her work has been exhibited in UK, Japan, and China.

In 2020, she founded CUCKOONESS, a creative collective focuses on Authenticity, Spontaneity, & Play. Discover more about it HERE.
